Clarence Jackson Sr., along with his wife and their son, Jr., moved to Akron, Ohio, in 1936 from Brownsville, Pennsylvania. As newcomers to Akron, Jackson and his family were vacationing weekend guests of the Waters family, who owned a hotel in Ravenna, Ohio. At the time, he was hoping to start a cleaning and pressing business in Akron. Jackson’s J. & J. Cleaners opened in 1937 and was located at 851 Bellows Street. It appeared in the 1940 Akron Negro Directory as Clarence Jackson Cleaning and Pressing.
